Compliance Period

A fiscal rolling triennial which ends every June 30 and looks back over the previous 3 years. For Registered Accounting Practitioners (RAP) the period is a rolling calendar year based triennial which ends every December 31 and looks back over the previous 3 years.

A new licensee’s first period will begin on the date of licensure and end on the following June 30. Their second period will run from the date of licensure and end on the second June 30 after licensure. Their third period will run from the date of licensure until the third June 30 after licensure. A newly licensed RAP’s first period will begin on the date of licensure and end on the following December 31. Their second period will run from the date of licensure and end on the second December 31 after licensure. Their third period will run from the date of licensure until the third December 31 after licensure.


Total Requirement

During the period at least 120 credits must be earned during the period.

For RAPs at least 90 credits must be earned during the period.

For new licensees, during the first period, there is no requirement. During the second period there is a 20 credit requirement with all 20 credits needing to be earned during that specific fiscal year. During the third period there is a 20 credit requirement with all 20 credits needing to be earned during that specific fiscal year.


Annual Requirement

At least 20 credits must be earned during every year of the period.

RAPs do not have an annual requirement.


Ethics Requirement

At least 8 credits must be earned during the period.

For new licensees, they do not need to show that 8 credits were earned in Ethics until the first full rolling 3 year period occurs. RAPs have a 4 credit Ethics requirement


Personal Development Restriction

No more than 24 credits can be earned in personal development as defined in the Statement on Standards for Continuing Professional Education during the three year period.


Teaching Restriction

No more than 60 of the credits earned in the period can be earned through teaching CPE or university programs.


Writing Restriction

No more than 60 of the credits earned in the period can be through the writing and publication of books and/or articles


Self-Study Restriction

No more than 96 of the credits earned in the period can be through programs delivered in self-study formats. Self-study must be approved by NASBA’s Quality Assurance Service.
